Auto Cat Flaps

December 27th, 2008

I can see what this gadget is all about. Pop a microchip onto your kitty and the little one controls the cat-flap. Be gone all you other neighborhood cats! See, the cat flap detects if it is your cat (via microchip) and only lets in your cat.

You can even set an auto lock system; no cat exits at night where the ‘gate to great outdoors’ is only open during the day.

I thoroughly understand the merit behind such a system. We had a harrowing experience when a wandering cat from the area strolled in and picked a fight with the little kitty of the house.

Worse yet, in their little angry scuffle they broke two wine bottles in the nearby case. Eeek!

On the other hand, you wonder about this handy I-will-track-you-Trekkie style gadgets.

Is it really foolproof?

What if the kitty comes home to a 404 Error notice on the flap?

Alright, I am talking through my hat with that one but you know what I mean.

And here’s the ultimate funny scenario… what if your cat wanted to bring home a ‘friend’. That’s never going to happen once the microchip is in, is it?

Or cats coming in to party when you are out. You know, seven cat curling up on your sofa, sipping margaritas.

Shame kitties!

I installed one of these automated doors for my dauchund. Sadly, they are designed for cats that have short necks and noses. My dog’s nose length meant that his nose often hit the door prior to the chip activating the unlock.

Finally, I had to leave it unlocked.

neat gadget…though i’m of the opinion that cats shouldn’t go outdoors where they can get injured and beaten up by other kitties!

Since I work out of the house during the days, I installed a dog door when I got my last dog. It was very convenient but I often worried about other critters (possums, rats, etc) coming in. The door had a slight magnetic catch on it so the animal had to push it pretty hard to get it open. Maybe that was enough since I never actually had other beasts come through.

Another fun topic would be how I trained the dog to go thru. We used a little of treats but the breakthrough was when my three year son would crawal through it.

    If only I had pictures.

@Seo Learners Awwwh. He must have looked quite upset first few times.

@Jaime Hmm, perhaps we might see the beaten up kitty doing a karate kid training scene. That would be something.

@ Web Schooler lol, you know what they say … we could all learn a lot from little kids. :)
